A major fire broke out at an SRA residential building in Mumbai's Andheri West on Friday, triggering a large-scale rescue operation after several residents became trapped inside the smoke-filled structure. Thick smoke quickly spread through the building, creating panic among occupants and forcing some to take extreme measures to escape.
The blaze erupted in SRA Building No. 2 at Gaodevi Dongar, near Noor Masjid, Khoja Jamatkhana, and Delhi United Society. Within minutes, dense white and grey smoke engulfed multiple floors, making evacuation difficult for residents.
Videos shared on social media captured dramatic scenes of people standing on balconies and leaning out of windows, desperately calling for help. Some residents were also seen attempting to climb along the building's exterior, while eyewitnesses claimed a few people jumped from the third and fourth floors in an effort to escape before rescue teams reached them.
Despite heavy rainfall, the Mumbai Fire Brigade responded swiftly and launched an extensive rescue operation. Firefighters entered the smoke-filled building, evacuated numerous trapped residents, and worked for several hours before bringing the fire under control.
Multiple emergency agencies, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, DN Nagar Police, and Adani Electricity personnel, were deployed to the scene. Police cordoned off the area to facilitate rescue efforts and prevent onlookers from entering the danger zone.
