According to the latest reports, on Thursday, May 12, Maharashtra Environment Minister, Aaditya Thackeray remarked that the state government was curating a plan to see to it that a single planning authority governs the city of Mumbai in one year. This authority will reportedly be headed by the mayor who will be accorded administrative powers.

These comments were reportedly made by Thackeray at an international conference, "Climate Crisis 2.0 – Mobilizing Finance for Coastal Cities". The event was held in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Maharashtra government and Mumbai First, a not-for-profit organization.

Thackeray was quoted in accounts elaborating on how there are many agencies in the city, therefore a single planning authority will be important for enhanced project implementation. He added that in the planning authority, they do not need a CEO but an "empowered mayor" because the mayor will be more democratic. This he says, they are working on.

The Mumbai suburban guardian minister further elucidated that there are 16 planning agencies and 43 utilities in Mumbai. He opines that a single planning authority could address many issues and it's likely to be set up in a year.

In addition to the BMC, Mumbai has many planning agencies that include MMRDA, MHADA, SRA, MIDC and MSRTC amongst others.
