Mumbai: BMC Plans To Make EV Charging Points Mandatory In New Buildings

In residential buildings, the charging points will have a capacity of 15 Amp - 40 Amp. Presently, there isn't any provision to put up EV charging points in the DP-2034.

According to the latest reports, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is looking to make electric vehicle (EV) charging points mandatory in new buildings that would be built in the city. Officials from the BMC have been quoted in accounts elaborating on how they will seek an amendment in Development Control Regulations in Development Plan 2034 (DP-2034) for new buildings to have EV charging points. 

Based on accounts, Sunil Godse, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Environment) elaborated on how the civic body is looking to write to the Maharashtra urban development department for an amendment to the DP. He was quoted in narratives elaborating on how they are proposing to make EV charging points mandatory in residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

Godse added that they look to encourage developers to install charging stations in new buildings. Moreover, they want to offer incentives which is also being discussed. 

It has been reported that in residential buildings, the charging points will have a capacity of 15 Amp - 40 Amp. Presently, there isn't any provision to put up EV charging points in the DP-2034. 

Per BMC data, 642 EVs were registered in 2019-20, 1,422 in 2020-21 and 3,007 in 2021-22, cited reports. These depict a gradual increase in EV registrations.

The Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Environment) elucidated that the civic authority is looking to put up charging stations at 28 locations in municipal properties. 

On the other hand, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) is looking to put up 55 charging stations in bus depots and stations.
