CNG prices in Mumbai have been increased by INR 2 per kg to INR 84 per kg by Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), effective May 14 across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and the entire MMR region.
Rising global tensions and high crude oil prices have raised concerns that petrol and diesel prices may also increase soon. However, before that, Mumbai and surrounding areas have already received a major inflation shock due to the CNG price hike announced by Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL).
The revised rate has been implemented across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, increasing CNG from INR 82 to INR 84 per kg.
The hike is attributed to geopolitical tensions affecting global energy supply, especially in the Middle East, a weaker Indian rupee against the US dollar, rising international crude oil prices, and higher costs of imported natural gas due to limited domestic supply.
Impact on auto-rickshaws and taxis
Around 12.8 lakh vehicles in the region run on CNG, including 4.7 lakh auto-rickshaws, 1.6 lakh taxis, and over 5 lakh private cars. Following the hike, auto and taxi unions are expected to demand fare revisions.
Union leaders estimate that operating costs for autos may rise by about INR 1.03 per kilometre, and they are demanding at least a INR 1 increase in minimum fares.
