Considering the monsoon, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has given a big relief to the tenants living in dangerous buildings in Mumbai. During the reconstruction of these buildings, the tenants will be given a rent of INR 20,000 per month for alternative accommodation.
96 buildings declared 'dangerous'
96 buildings have been found dangerous in the pre-monsoon inspection of the Mumbai Building Repair and Reconstruction Board (MBRRB). There are a total of 13,091 buildings in the island areas of Mumbai. Structural deterioration of many of these buildings has necessitated immediate rehabilitation. Meanwhile, tenants have been given interim rent and temporary accommodation.

2,577 residential and 585 non-residential tenants are currently living in these dangerous buildings. Since only 786 transit tenements are available, it is not possible to shift everyone immediately. Therefore, MHADA Vice-President Sanjay Jaiswal has decided to give INR 20,000 per month. Apart from this, orders have been given to publish advertisements for renting out 400 transit tenements of 180 to 250 square feet.
Who will bear the cost?
All the expenses incurred for both these schemes (monthly rent and leased tenement) will be recovered from the respective private developers or co-operative housing societies. Last month, 184 residential tenants were served eviction notices. Of these, only 3 tenants moved to the transit camp, while the rest are yet to find alternative accommodation.
