The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is set to build over 7,00,000 houses in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) in the next five years, including around 5,50,000 in the city, MHADA Vice Chairman and CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal said.

These houses will include affordable houses sold through lottery, inclusive housing projects, redevelopment projects, renovation of Prime Minister Grant-in-Aid Project (PMGP) colonies and cluster redevelopments implemented by the Housing Authority.

According to information obtained by Hindustan Times from the Housing Authority, 1,20,864 houses are expected to be built through redevelopment of cessed buildings in South Mumbai under Section 33(7) of the Development Control Rules.

Another 27,107 houses will be built from cessed buildings under Section 33(9) of the DCR.

Also, 7,769 houses will be constructed from the Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment project, 19,131 houses from the redevelopment of Kamathipura, 90,677 houses from the slum redevelopment projects jointly undertaken with the Slum Redevelopment Authority and 15,805 houses from the reconstruction of PMGP Colony.

The figures show that a total of 5,39,118 houses will be constructed in Mumbai from these projects.

These projects will include rehabilitation components, free sale components for developers and units given to MHADA.

In MMR, the figures show that the Housing Authority will construct 1,80,403 units in the next five years.

These units will be used to construct houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (88,797), Konkan Board Housing Lottery (22,606), Inclusive Housing Projects (60,000), 15% units in Integrated Township Projects (6,000) and under Section 33(5) of DCR and Cluster Redevelopment Scheme (3,000).
