With the Maharashtra government announcing fresh restrictions in order to contain the spread of the coronavirus, migrant workers have stated that the restrictions are similar to the ones that were imposed last year which would, in turn, affect their wages.

According to reports, several workers have stated that they are considering returning home. Moreover, amidst reports of a possible lockdown last week, several daily wagers had already started leaving Mumbai, especially over the past two days. In addition, the workers fear that the train services could be stopped abruptly like last year which in turn is making them leave the city immediately.

Meanwhile, the authorities have stated that at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Kurla, from where trains for Uttar Pradesh and Bihar depart, there was a rise in the number of passengers in the past two days. Moreover, on April 4, while most of the passengers had advance bookings for their destination, several migrant workers reached the station after hearing Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announcing fresh restrictions amidst the rise in cases of coronavirus.

Several labourers from all over the country live in Mumbai, Pune, Nashik and Nagpur for their livelihood. Most of these people belong to the unorganized sector or are part-time workers. On March 24 last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a lockdown without prior warning due to which all transportation services were paused. With most services being halted, several migrant workers were left stranded without any food or money and have had to walk long stretches or hitched rides to go back home.
