The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has submitted a proposal to develop a 350 square kilometer township across the city harbour.

MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee said their aim was to make the region, located at the the back of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and the Mumbai Trans harbour Link (MTHL), into the fastest growing centre region in a decade.

He made these statement during his address to realty developers at an event organised by the industry lobby NAREDCO. He further stated that MMRDA has proposed a new town where MTHL will be located as the project is expected to be a game changer. Mumbai itself is spread over 600 sq km, while Navi Mumbai is spread over 344 sq km, and the nearby city of NAINA, planned by CIDCO, is spread over 370 sq km."

Mukherjee also revealed that MMRDA's plan included ensuring that infrastructure such as transport connectivity is developed before buildings are constructed.

Mukherjee said the proposed town is different from Naina and declined to share further details. He exclaimed that 2025 will be a "watermark" year in the megapolis' infrastructure journey, and pointed out that a slew of projects being undertaken now will get fructified then.

He said MTHL and NMIA will each boost the national GDP by 1 percentage point, which will turn the Navi Mumbai region into a hotspot for economic activity.

It is pertinent to note that the 160-hectare Bandra Kurla Complex business district, also developed by the MMRDA a few decades ago, contributes 2.8 per cent of the national GDP.
