The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued yellow alert for Mumbai till, May 28. This comes after the IMD had officially announced the arrival of monsoon in the state on Sunday, May 25, making it the earliest onset of the annual rainfall season over the state in 35 years.
This year, the monsoon has entered Maharashtra 10 days before the usual date of June 5. This is the first time since 1990 that the monsoon has reached the state so early. In 1990, southwest monsoon made onset over Maharashtra on May 20, IMD scientist Sushma Nair said.
Moreover, Mumbai may see the monsoon arrive in the next three days. If that happens, it would be the earliest ever monsoon onset recorded in the city, said IMD Mumbai director Shubhangi Bhute.
The previous earliest date was May 29, recorded in 1956, 1962, and 1971. Normally, the monsoon reaches Mumbai around June 11.
As per the observatories at Colaba and Santacruz, the total rainfall in the city in 2025 till Sunday was 159.2 mm and 164.3 mm, respectively.
This year's monsoon has started strongly, and the Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains in the coming period as well.
The Agriculture Department has also advised farmers not to sow seeds yet, giving technical advice. There is a possibility of rivers and streams overflowing due to heavy rains. As a result, disaster management systems have been kept ready.
The administration has appealed to citizens to be alert and has advised them not to step out of their homes unless necessary during the rains. It has been said that citizens living in coastal and riverside areas should take extra precautions.
