Mumbai: More than 11,000 e-travel passes issued to travel out of city

After the lockdown-like restrictions imposed across Maharashtra, the state government issued new guidelines, which says that it is mandatory for citizens to obtain e-passes for travel outside Mumbai for emergency and essential services.

According to reports, out of the total applications received the Mumbai Police has issued only 11,300 e-travel passes for people to travel from Mumbai to various districts across the state and other parts of the country, till Wednesday, May 5.

As per the latest development in the wake of rising cases of coronavirus in the state government had said that e-travel passes will be issued only to those travelling in extreme emergencies. Accordingly, the passes were issued to those who were travelling due to genuine reasons, sources stated.

Deputy commissioner of police (PRO) S Chaitanya said that they have so far received 44,158 applications for e-passes of which only 11,300 — roughly 25 per cent — were permitted to travel.

The authority of approval or rejection of e-passes lies exclusively with the zonal deputy commissioner of police. Sources said many applications were from relatives wanting to see their elderly parents, medical reasons, many whose wives were expecting a child and others who had to attend funerals of their loved ones.

Maharashtra continues to be the epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic, following which some restrictions were first announced on April 14. However, the state announced more stringent restrictions on April 21.
