The COVID-19 cases are now declining, and with the city registering less than 300 cases, 92% of beds are lying vacant across Mumbai hospitals. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data revealed that 14,427 of the total 15,568 COVID beds are lying vacant.

Moreover, of the 2,166 ICU beds, 1,808 beds and 7,464 oxygen beds are lying vacant.

However, the civic administration feels that the percentage will be reduced as a surge in coronavirus cases is likely from next week.

Suresh Kakani, the additional municipal commissioner, said that the process of bed allotment was streamlined in mid-April. When the BMC learnt that patients used to reserve beds directly through their sources, they decentralised the system and set up ward war rooms. They have directed hospitals not to admit any patient until they get a call from the ward war room.

Currently, 1,500 patients are undergoing treatment at jumbo COVID-19 centres experiencing mild to moderate symptoms of the virus, of which 258 patients are critical. If there is a rise in cases, they have enough beds to accommodate all of them.

Meanwhile, the BMC is all set to ramp up the testing to make sure that the infection is under control after the Diwali festivity. They will also be conducting the next serosurvey in February 2022.
