In the family planning programme in Mumbai, more women as compared to men have undergone the sterilization process. Based on the data from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Public Health Department, over 48,500 women chose to be sterilized in contrast to the 350 males who underwent vasectomy in the past three years, stated a report by The Indian Express.
From 2018-19 to 2020-21, information elucidates that, 48,725 women in the city were sterilized by the civic authority. Whilst a mere 350 men endured vasectomy as part of the family planning programme. According to the report, officials have brought to light that in 2018-19, 19,263 women and 186 men were sterilized. However, in 2019-20 and 2020-21, the programme saw a fall in numbers.
Based on the statistics, in 2019-20 and 2020-21, 17,659 and 11,803 women, respectively decided to be sterilized. This number when paralleled to men, stood at 116 and 49 in 2019-20 and 2020-21, respectively, elaborated the report.
The said stark difference in numbers makes one ponder over why more women undergo sterilization as compared to men. The reasons for this can be attributed to a variety of factors which include those of patriarchal division in society, women taking the onus for family planning since they bear the child, amongst others.
Additionally, officials from the civic authority cite coronavirus as a reason for the decline in numbers. The authorities are looking to commence awareness campaigns for the said program, mentioned the account.
