A controversy has broken out over the proposed redevelopment of Motilal Nagar in Goregaon after remarks by a senior official of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority sparked strong reactions from residents.
The dispute arose during a public meeting organised to present the master plan of the large-scale project, which spans nearly 143 acres and is among the biggest redevelopment initiatives in the city.
During the meeting, MHADA Vice President and CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal allegedly had a heated exchange with a resident who raised concerns about housing entitlements. The official reportedly questioned the resident’s eligibility and directed authorities to verify his identity, warning of action if found ineligible.
The remarks triggered protests and criticism from residents and political leaders, who said the incident undermines public participation in redevelopment discussions and raises concerns about transparency.
MHADA officials, however, defended the response, stating that the comments were made in the context of identifying unauthorised occupants and maintaining order during the meeting. They also claimed that some individuals present were not eligible residents and were disrupting the proceedings.
The Motilal Nagar redevelopment project aims to transform the area into a modern township with upgraded infrastructure and housing. However, the controversy has heightened tensions between authorities and residents, casting a shadow over the project’s progress.
