The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) had recently announced that it will monitor pollution in the city at main traffic signals. Air Quality monitors will be mounted on the drones to obtain real-time data of pollution. The project was implemented on pilot-basis to determine the concentration of pollution in respective areas. Junctions at Andheri, Bandra, Sion, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, and Haji Ali will be continuously monitored over 15 days.

The implementation of these drones was finally done and the real-time air quality was monitored at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)Bombay's main gate in Powai. The Air Quality was monitored in three different frames from morning to evening.

As stated in the Hindustan Times, after assessing the data, mitigation measures will be identified under the city’s air pollution action plan. A similar exercise will be carried out at four other locations: Fort to JJ Junction in south Mumbai; Nana Chowk to Lower Parel in south-central Mumbai; Malad to Borivli (including Dindoshi, Veer Savarkar flyover, Malad chowk) in the western suburbs; and Bhandup to Thane railway stations. The officials stated that the drones would monitor pollution for two weeks and MPCB would release the analysis and findings within 90 days.

Chairman of MPCB Sudhir Srivastava stated that MPCB had obtained the desired permissions from Mumbai Police to use the drones. He further said that this concept is similar to National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) Drone Application that was launched in Nagpur last month.
