Connectivity has become a very important part of daily lives. In a crisis like this, when we are to remain locked up till May 3 and also expected to work from home, the need for a reliable ISP grows even more. Even the government recognises the internet and telecom as essential services and they have been asked to carry operations despite the pandemic.

However, things are not going to well for some users of MTNL. The network line of the state-owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has been non-functional in parts of Mumbai, for more than 24 hours. The network service for landlines along with the cell numbers is non-operational in Mumbai’s Dahisar and Borivali areas.

Moreover, the MTNL lines of people staying in Kenilworth building near Jaslok Hospital are also dead. The Kenilworth building serves as the living quarters for scientists working in Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC).

The resident residing in the area told Mumbai Live there is no staff at the MTNL office. However, having limited or no staff doesn’t explain why the services are interrupted nor does they answer the question that most people living in the areas might be wondering - when these services will be back online?

Since there is a lockdown in place due to the coronavirus outbreak, people are staying and working at their homes. However, some residents who have MTNL network are facing major difficulty as their cell numbers and landlines are not operational.

Mumbai Live tried to reach out to MTNL office in Mumbai over the phone. However, there was no answer.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the nationwide lockdown has been extended till May 3. The guidelines issued by the union and state government highlight the importance of staying at home during the coronavirus outbreak in order to stop the spread of the deadly virus.
