The film industry has been facing losses for the last year and a half. The coronavirus and the lockdown have resulted in many movies skipping the theoretical release and going straight to OTT.

Ton Tuesday, September 7, the Multiplex Association of India (MAI), along with leading cinema chains PVR and INOX appealed to the Maharashtra government to reopen theatres across the state on an “urgent basis”.

According to reports, the exhibition industry has suffered losses amounting to INR 4,800 crores. Meanwhile, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus and the subsequent lockdowns, film shoots along with theatres had closed operations twice which impacted the industry at large. Moreover, Maharashtra happens to be key when it comes to Hindi cinema. Therefore, the consent from Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray happens to be pertinent during these testing times.

Meanwhile, in its letter, which the MAI shared stated that "At the rate of a monthly loss of Rs 400 crore, the Maharashtra cinema exhibition industry has lost approximately Rs 4,800 crores in various lockdowns since March 2020,”

Some movies had even adopted a hybrid model. Salman Khan starter Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai was one such movie. The movie had released on ZEE5 and released in theatres worldwide. It had garnered good views on the OTT and decent collections from the middle east market.
