The state is set to get a new state-of-the-art railway station in the heart of Mumbai's upscale commercial hub, the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The station will be the only underground station in the project and will feature three floors, two entry/exit points, and easy access to a nearby metro station, making it a convenient option for commuters from Thane and Virar. The station will be just 10 minutes away from Thane and 30 minutes away from Virar.

In response to the project's invitation of bids, Afcons Infrastructure Limited and Larsen & Toubro Limited have filed their technical bids. The corridor's 508 km total length and 2.58 hour total trip duration make it an efficient and sensible option for long-distance travel. There will be three depots one at Thane in Maharashtra and the other two at Surat and Sabarmati in Gujarat. The operational control centre is located in Sabarmati.

The project has made significant progress, with 98.88% of the land required for the project already acquired. The BKC station land has been acquired from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and will be returned after the completion of the underground work.

The 21-km tunnel, including a 7-km undersea tunnel, is set to be the first of its kind in India and will be constructed using Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). The undersea tunnel will have twin tracks for both up and down services, and 39 equipment rooms will be constructed as part of the project. The tunnel will be 25-65 metres deep from ground level, with the deepest point located 114 metres below a hill.
