Mumbai’s suburban railway system records at least seven deaths every day. In the last three years, 7,560 passengers lost their lives, and 7,293 suffered injuries. Many victims fall from moving trains, while some die while crossing tracks or due to overcrowding.
The Thane-Kalyan section on Central Railway (CR) is reported to be the most dangerous. In 2024 alone, 387 people died after falling from trains here. Another 788 were injured. Kalyan reported 116 deaths, Thane had 68, and Dombivli saw 39 fatalities.

CR’s main line accounted for 58% of accidents. Deaths slightly decreased in 2024. However, injuries rose sharply. Most deaths occurred due to overcrowding, track-crossing, and falls from trains.
Trains designed for 1,200 passengers often carry over 5,500 during peak hours. That is reported to be the main cause. Closed-door AC trains on Western Railway may have slightly reduced deaths there. Lack of fencing, poor crowd control, and insufficient trains are some other reasons.
Interestingly, 1.1 million of the 2.6 million commuters who use the CSMT-Karjat/Kasara line every day come from Thane and beyond. 70% of trains are crowded during rush hour. Authorities have added 100 train services but demand is still high.
New lines like Karjat-Panvel (INR 2,782 crore) and Kalyan-Asangaon extension (INR 4,062 crore) are planned by CR to relieve traffic.
