Mumbaikars will face a water shortage today, March 19, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 15 per cent water cut across the city.

This development comes due to the lack of water in Pise dam following repair works. The civic body has said that the water cut will be in place for a 24-hour time in the entire Mumbai.

It is pertinent to note this is in addition to the 5 per cent water cut in force till April 24 due to pre-monsoon maintenance work at the Bhandup complex.

On Saturday March 16, one of the 32 rubber bladders of the gate on the dam at Pisa suddenly failed, causing the water to leak. To repair this bladder, the water level at Pisa was lowered to 31 meters. For this, the supply from Bhatsa Dam had to be controlled. After this, the civic body administration completed the rubber bladder repair work on Monday, March 18 from 8 am to 5 pm on war footing.

Later, the water was released again from Bhatsa dam. However, it will take time to restore the water level of the dam. The water released from Bhatsa Dam is stored in a reservoir created by constructing a dam at Pise. After the water level in the dam reached 31 meters, the repair work was taken up. Water has been released from Bhatsa Dam for Pise Bandha. However, the distance between both the dam is about 48 kilometers.

This water is supplied to Mumbaikars through the Mahasantulan Reservoir at Yewai after being treated at the water purification center at Panjrapur of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

Therefore, citizens have been urged to use water sparingly and sparingly and to cooperate with the BMC.
