The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to carry out internal inspection of the remaining compartments of Malabar Hill reservoir on Monday, December 18. Therefore, water supply to several areas in South Mumbai (SoBo) will be affected.

The BMC-appointed expert committee, comprising IIT-Bombay professors, local experts and municipal officials, will conduct an internal inspection of compartment I of Malabar Hill Reservoir to decide whether the tank will undergo repair works or demolition.

In a bid to aid the inspection work, the civic body is slated to empty the reservoir partially affecting water supply in several parts of the island city division.

As the compartment will have to be emptied for the inspection, some areas in wards A (Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Nariman Point, Churchgate, Fort), C (Bhuleshwar, Pydhonie, Marine Lines, Dhobi Talao), D (Tardeo, Girgaum, Walkeshwar, Malabar Hill, Altamont Road), G-North (Dadar, Mahim, Shivaji Park) and G-South (Worli, Lower Parel, Prabhadevi, Mahalaxmi), will face a 10% water cut, while some places will receive low pressure supply.

The internal inspection by the expert committee is scheduled to take place between 8 am and 10 am. The BMC has issued an appeal to residents of these wards to use water judiciously during this period.

According to the civic body, water supply will be affected in A, C and D wards as well as G/South and G/North wards which receive water through the century-old reservoir. Senior officials said the water supply will be suspended for 2 hours between 8 am and 10 am to facilitate the inspection work.

This comes a week after the civic body carried out an inspection of the second compartment of Malabar Hill reservoir. The committee has already conducted the first phase of the inspection on December 7.

The Malabar Hill reservoir is one of the first artificial water reservoirs built to meet regular water requirements of the island city. The reservoir is located beneath Kamala Nehru Park (Hanging Gardens) situated at Malabar Hill and has a capacity to supply 150 million litres per day (MLD).
