After lots of requests and warnings, the Maharashtra government has finally agreed the autorickshaw and taxi unions' demand to increase the minimum fare price in Mumbai.

This development came after the biggest taxi and autorickshaw unions is all set to go on an indefinite strike from September 26. As the 10-days deadline, which was requested by CM Shinde, had ended and no decision on fare hike was taken.

After local trains, autorickshaws and taxis are considered to be amongst the lifeline of Mumbai. Accordingly, the city would have come to a standstill if the auto and taxis union went on a strike.

According to an official statement released by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA), the new fares will come into effect from October 1. However, the time given for recalibration of meters by RTO is till November 30, 2022.

With the latest increase, the basic fares have been hiked by INR 3 and INR 2 respectively. Therefore, Mumbaikars will have to pay INR 28 as the minimum fare for travelling in black and yellow taxis and INR 23 for auto rickshaws.

Further for every kilometer the fares will increase by INR 15.33 instead of 14.20 for autorickshaws and INR 18.66 instead of INR 16.93 for taxis respectively.

If reports are to be believed, the decision to hike the fares was taken in the MMRTA meeting chaired by the Maharashtra transport secretary on Monday, September 26.

But it was announced only after the minutes of the meeting were signed on Tuesday, September 27.
