The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started an anti-plastic operation in the city and suburbs of Mumbai on August 21 and so far, the municipal administration has collected a fine of INR 24.65 lakh. Also, a total of 104.65 kg of plastic was seized. The municipal administration visited 597 shops and establishments on Monday and collected a fine of INR 95,000 in one day.


As per the directives of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, the BMC has again intensified the plastic ban operation from August. Punitive action is being taken by the municipal administration on those who use all kinds of plastic bags, plastic containers, spoons, bowls, glasses, bowls etc. and those who sell them. The BMC is issuing a fine of INR 5,000 for the first offence and INR 10,000 for the second offence.

From August 21 till now, the BMC has collected a fine of INR 12,475. Looking at the overall report for the year 2022, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has taken penal action of 1 crore seven lakh 60 thousand till date on the violators of the plastic ban. No action was taken on Monday due to lack of sufficient manpower in a total of 10 departments of the Municipal Corporation. From August 21 to September 4, the BMC has registered the first case against 493 people. On September 4, various shops, markets and establishments were raided and penal action was taken against 19 persons under the first offence in one day.
