In response to recent gas cylinder explosions in Mumbai, including serious incidents in Kandivali and Ghatkopar that left several people with severe burns, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a large-scale public awareness campaign.
At the direction of BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, the campaign will run from October 7 to 17 across more than 350 locations in the city. It aims to educate citizens on the safe use of LPG cylinders, following a series of fatal accidents.
The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum, Mumbai’s major gas distributors. According to Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar, live demonstrations and safety guidance will be provided during the camps. He also warned that strict action will be taken against the use of unauthorised gas cylinders.
While Bharat Petroleum has 1.45 million domestic customers and 38,000 commercial customers, Hindustan Petroleum has 1.05 million domestic customers and 40,000 commercial customers.
Together, both companies serve approximately 2.5 million domestic and 78,000 commercial customers in Mumbai. While most households have two cylinders, many commercial users operate with multiple cylinders or ‘cylinder banks’, indicating that the actual number of cylinders in use is significantly higher than the number of customers.
The BMC urges all residents to participate in the safety camps and stay informed to prevent further tragedies.
