The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved a INR 2.94-crore renovation project for the 46-year-old Veer Savarkar Municipal Market in Dadar (West), following a structural audit that classified the building as 'C-2' (dangerous). The proposal has been placed before the Standing Committee for final approval.
The renovation aims to restore the ageing market and improve safety for traders and visitors. Planned works include strengthening the structure with new concrete foundations, installing a new Galvalume sheet roof supported by steel and wooden trusses, repairing rainwater gutters, upgrading electrical systems, plumbing and drainage networks, and carrying out painting, flooring, brickwork and plastering.
The project also includes the installation of new iron gates and protective grills, replacement of doors and windows, steel fabrication work, termite-control measures, and the installation of a new overhead water tank.
Located in Dadar West, the Veer Savarkar Municipal Market has been serving residents for over four decades. Civic officials said the renovation is intended to improve the market's structural stability and extend its operational life while ensuring the safety of vendors and the public.
