With thousands of devotees expected to visit Ganeshotsav mandals across Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched an initiative to train volunteers in disaster management and emergency response.
Under the programme, volunteers from public Ganeshotsav mandals will undergo a one-day training session aimed at preparing them to deal with emergencies that could arise during the festival.
The training will focus on key areas such as crowd management, fire safety, electrical accidents and medical emergencies. Volunteers will also receive guidance on first aid and CPR, enabling them to provide immediate assistance before professional emergency services arrive.
8-10 volunteers from each mandal
The civic body plans to train eight to 10 volunteers from each Ganeshotsav mandal. The volunteers are expected to play an important role in managing crowds and responding quickly to emergencies at pandals and during festival-related activities.
Officials from the BMC Disaster Management Department, Mumbai Fire Brigade, electricity and transport departments, police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) will participate in the training programme.
Focus on crowd safety and emergency response
Mumbai's Ganeshotsav attracts large numbers of devotees and tourists, particularly at prominent public mandals. With heavy footfall expected during darshan and immersion-related activities, effective crowd management is a key safety concern.
The training will equip mandal volunteers with basic skills to identify potential risks, manage crowds and take appropriate action during emergencies.
The BMC is also encouraging Ganeshotsav mandals to adopt environment-friendly practices while making arrangements for the festival.
The civic administration has appealed to all public Ganeshotsav mandals to participate in the training initiative and help ensure that the festival is conducted safely and smoothly.
