The dispute over Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's government's decision to decrease the number of wards from 236 to 227 for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections has now reached the Supreme Court. Former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's group challenged the decision of the High Court in the matter in the Supreme Court on Wednesday. The petition will be heard on May 18.

Last month, the High Court rejected the petitions challenging the Shinde government's decision stating that the decision of the Shinde government to restore the number of wards is in accordance with the order of the Supreme Court and is valid. These petitions were filed by Shiv Sena corporators Raju Pednekar and Sameer Desai. Pednekar has challenged this decision of the High Court in the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court had last year ordered the election program of local self-government bodies whose term had expired. Moreover, it was also clarified to consider the ward number before March 11, 2022.

The Supreme Court had also made it clear that if the state government decides to increase or decrease the number of constituencies after this date, it will apply to future elections. However, as the State Election Commission has ignored this, it is seen that the current government has decided to restore the number of wards.

It is for this reason that the government decision taken by the Shinde government to restore the number of wards and subsequent amendments to the law is in line with the order given by the Supreme Court.
