The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed the installation of a smart CCTV surveillance system along the mumbai Coastal Road. A total of 236 cameras have been placed on the stretch to improve safety and monitor traffic in real-time.
The system covers the 10.58-kilometre road from Shamaldas Gandhi Marg near Princess Street flyover to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The cameras were installed after several vehicle breakdowns and accidents were reported on this road.
Since February, there have been four accidents and 38 vehicle failures. These incidents raised concerns about emergency response and tunnel safety. To address this, the BMC has installed advanced cameras that send instant alerts to the control room in case of accidents or wrong-way driving.
The road includes a 3.4-kilometre twin tunnel. At some points, four lanes reduce to two, causing traffic bottlenecks. Many disruptions were caused by vehicle breakdowns and overspeeding, especially by luxury cars.
To deal with this, 154 cameras were installed inside the twin tunnels. These are part of a system called Video Incident Detection System. They are placed every 50 meters. These cameras detect accidents, stalled vehicles, and vehicles driving in the wrong direction.
Automatic traffic counting cameras have also been installed at the entry and exit points of the tunnel. These cameras collect data such as the number and type of vehicles using the road.
Seven Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras have been placed along the stretch. These cameras identify vehicles going over the speed limit. This helps in taking action against speeding drivers.
All data from the cameras is shared in real-time with the BMC and the Mumbai Traffic Police. This helps in traffic management and enforcement. The cameras are expected to help in controlling racing, speeding, and noise on the road.
