Mumbai collects more than a third of customs revenue in country: Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao

Focusing on the motto - “SMART borders for seamless Trade, Travel and Transport”, International Customs Day was celebrated on Friday in Mumbai in the presence of honourable chief guest Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao.

Earlier, World Customs Organisation (WCO) Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya had informed that SMART stands for “Secure, Measurable, Automated, Risk Management-based and Technology-driven”. 

While addressing the gathering in Mumbai, Governor Rao said that the customs officers in a country play a very critical role in the process of nation’s development. 

Over the years, the challenges faced by the Customs Officers in their daily work have increased. Facilitating trade, simplifying, standardising and harmonising flows and material across the border can be made simple with the adoption of technology,” Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao asserted.

weWhile appreciating the Mumbai Customs for constituting more than third of the customs revenues collected across the entire country, Governor Rao informed that India’s ranking in Trading Across Border has polished up from 146 to 80. 

"This will help India in its pursuit to improve rankings in the ease of doing business,” Rao added. Currently, India is the regional head of WCO’s Asia Pacific Region for a period of two years from July 2018 to June 2020.
