A strange incident of pet intolerance was recently reported in Mumbai when the landlord of a Versova-based flat served his tenants an eviction notice after their daughter visited them with her pet dog. The society has a no-pets rule for residents but the couple’s daughter said the agreement did not mention anything about visitors’ pets.

According to a report published in Mumbai Mirror, Zarina and Abdul Razak Fruitwala moved into the flat at Everest Society, Versova, just 15 days ago. Their daughter Minaz, who is an actor and photographer, said that her parents shifted on October 20 and they don’t own any pet.

"I visit them with my dog every few days to check on their well-being. When I visited the society, the owner objected saying there are rule against pets. However, there was no mention of the visiting pets in the agreement. And now the landlord is asking my parents to vacate the flat. If I go for some work and leave the dogs with them, then what is the problem in it?" the report quoted Minaz as saying.

Meanwhile, the landlord, Mushtaq Hetavkar claimed that the no-pet policy was made clear in advance.

After writing about the issue on social media, she found that she wasn’t the only one facing this problem. Many landlords and housing societies in Mumbai, it seems, have an issue with people keeping pets. Strangely, a few allow flat owners to have pets but not tenants.

However, objecting to any rules against keeping pets, chairman of the Maharashtra Societies Welfare Association Ramesh Prabhu said there are many court orders in favour of keeping the pets.
