The Central Railway (CR) is converting ageing Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches at Matunga, Parel workshops into automobile carriers and accident relief trains (ARTs). The coaches with residual life of five years will be converted and these converted coaches will have a total codal life of 25 years.
In the current financial year between April and September 2023, 57 ICF coaches have been converted into NMGHS automobile carriers and 4 ICF coaches have been converted into ART, as per the CR. The CR officials believe that the introduction of additional ARTs will help in emergency situations at times of accidents.
In the first six months of this financial year 2023-24, the Central Railway transported 74,318 automobiles against 57,431 automobiles transported during the same period last year. The newly designed coaches have been designed in a specific way that will help it to run at the speed of 110 kmph as against the existing 75 kmph.
