The incident took place around 3 a.m. at Buntara Bhavan, a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) building in the Indira Nagar area, near Galaxy Apartment. The crane was reportedly being installed as part of preparations for an eviction and demolition operation when it suddenly collapsed onto nearby houses.
Six of the injured were taken to Sion Hospital, while two were admitted to Bhabha Hospital in Kurla. Officials said all eight injured people were in stable condition.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, ambulance personnel and local civic authorities rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations. Officials were also checking whether anyone else was trapped following the collapse.
The accident disrupted the movement of goods trains on the Kurla-Trombay railway route, according to officials.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances that led to the crane toppling.
