The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to use eco-friendly wood burning systems in crematoriums for pyre cremation of bodies. This technology will be used at nine locations in mumbai city and both suburbs. It will be useful in avoiding environmental degradation by reducing wood as well as preventing air pollution.
The use of eco-friendly wood burning systems along with electric and gas burners in crematoriums will further help in saving the environment.
Official stated that in this method, only 100-125 kg of pellet biomass is being used as compared to 350-400 kilograms of wood required for cremation. Therefore, an average 250 kg of wood will be saved in each cremation process.
14 crematoriums have been identified to use briquettes, pellets biomass as alternative fuel instead of wood for cremation. Currently, wood pyres, electric pyres and gas crematoriums are used for cremation at nearly 30 crematoriums in Mumbai. Of which, electric crematoriums are installed at 10 places and gas cremation facilities at 18 places.
Earlier in 2020, a pilot project of wood combustion system was implemented at Sion cremation centre. After this, the civic body's Mechanical and Electrical Department initiated tender process to implement this method at nine places across the city.
It will be set up at "these" locations:
Bhoiwada crematorium, Gowari crematorium (Wadala), Venkuthdham crematorium (Reay Road) as well as Tagore Nagar crematorium (Vikhroli), Deonar Colony crematorium (Govandi), Amardham Postal Colony (Chembur) and Babahai crematorium (Borivali), Western suburbs crematoriums at Oshiwara and Shivdham crematorium (Goregaon).
