The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) plans to buy new hydraulic-powered high-rise platforms. These platforms will improve emergency response and make firefighting in tall buildings simpler. Currently, the MFB has one snorkel that can reach 90 metres, or about 30-storeys.
Snorkels are mainly used in high-rise rescue operations. They help firefighters reach buildings from the outside when entering is not possible. The platforms are mounted on fire trucks and controlled using hydraulic levers. The current snorkel was added in 2015.
In comparison, the new platforms will be able to reach up to 35-storey buildings. This means the platforms can reach a height of 104 metres. The MFB expects to induct the new platforms by the end of this year. They will be ready for firefighting operations starting in 2026.
Earlier this month, the MFB issued a request for bids to purchase the new systems. This purchase will be the first major upgrade to the firefighting fleet in 10 years. Data from the MFB shows that almost 80% of fires start in high-rise buildings.
The average height of buildings in Mumbai has grown over the past ten years. Many new buildings now have 40-storeys or more. Many of these buildings do not have internal firefighting systems. Smoke can fill the entire building quickly and block access to upper floors where people may be trapped. External platforms like the new snorkels are needed in such cases.
Earlier this year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) released tenders for six rescue boats. These boats will help the MFB save drowning victims. Each boat is estimated to cost INR 9.62 lakh. The total cost, including taxes, is expected to be INR 64 lakh.
