For a year, the Mumbai Fire Brigade has been searching for a drone that can fly higher than 50 metres. Despite their efforts, they have not been able to find one that meets their needs. Firefighters are facing numerous challenges when it comes to fighting fires in high-rise buildings.

One of the main challenges that firefighters face is the weight of their equipment. Their oxygen cylinders weigh over 6kg, making it difficult for them to climb high floors. The usual 90 metre ladder can give access to the 30th floor but as they go higher, the wind velocity becomes stronger, making it even more challenging. An official from the brigade reported that only the first 50 metres of a ladder can be reached with ease. Space is also an issue in the densely packed city.

Drones have become increasingly important in firefighting, especially in Mumbai. Drones have the ability to fly over 50 metres in the air. Mumbai fire brigade is specially looking for drones that are able to use a water pipe and other equipment to assist firefighters in putting out fires. Drones are also necessary for saving drowning victims. They can be particularly useful in slum areas where firefighters have difficulty reaching the scene due to the tightly packed area.

In October 2021, the fire department used a drone for the first time in a search operation while dousing fire at Avighna Park in Lower Parel.
