Amid the Ganeshotsav festivity, the the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has again cautioned Mumbaikars about jellyfish and stingrays which are found on the coasts of Mumbai last month.

The BMC said officials from the state government’s fisheries department paid a visit to Juhu Beach and urged the civic officials to erect public awareness boards at the beach. Owing to this, the officials have advised to not enter the ocean waters from August to October.

It is pertinent to note that this development came days after six persons were injured after being stung by blue bottle jellyfish in August.

Now, with the immersion of Ganesh idols taking place, the BMC issued tips and precautions to avoid any mishaps. The BMC has also advised to keep children away from water. The advisory added that jellyfish bites turn out to be itchy while stingray bites give a burning or stinging sensation.

Beach Safety Tips

  • Avoid entering the sea with exposed skin.
  • Wear gumboots when stepping into the water.
  • Adhere to instructions provided by the municipal administration.

Initial Steps for Sting Injuries

  • Carefully extract the sting.
  • Avoid rubbing and applying pressure to the wound to prevent spreading.
  • Rinse the wound using clean water.
  • Apply ice to the affected area.
  • Seek first aid at a clinic or hospital.

Artificial Lakes

Artificial lakes have been created by BMC at various places in Mumbai. An artificial lake has been created at the Jamboree grounds of Worli by the BMC and the Worli Sea Turtle Festival Committee. Two artificial ponds have been reserved at this place for immersion of Shadu idols.

Special Arrangements at beach

BMC has made preparations for immersion on the beaches and lakes of Mumbai. Preparations for immersion in lakes at Girgaum Chowpatty, Dadar Chowpatty, Mahim, Juhu along with beaches, Aarey Colony and other places have been completed. Apart from this, special arrangements have been made by Mumbai Police to prevent any untoward incident at the immersion site.
