The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) scheme to permit food trucks across multiple locations in the island city has received an objection from the hawker’s union, reported the Indian Express. The union has highlighted that whilst the execution of the hawker’s policy in Mumbai has been pending for over three years, the civic authority is initiating a policy to permit food trucks on roads and footpaths in Mumbai.

According to the report, an email was sent to civic chief Iqbal Singh Chahal on Tuesday to oppose the civic authority’s move. Recently, Chahal conducted a meeting with officials from the BMC and told them to curate a new Food Truck Policy for the city.

So far, the civic body has found 50 spots to put the food trucks. In the midst of this, the AITUC Hawkers Union stated that the civic body is depicting eagerness in curating the policy, whilst the hawkers wait for their allotment of spots. Based on the account, there are 15,000 eligible hawkers in Mumbai.

The BMC has been undertaking initiatives on a war footing to ensure the amelioration of the city. Similarly, the civic authority had recently undertaken an initiative to vaccinate female sex workers in Mumbai’s Kamathipura against the novel coronavirus
