According to civic officials in the island city, from the 1.60 lakh pregnant women in Mumbai, a mere 2,659 have been administered the coronavirus vaccine to date, reported the Indian Express. The officials alleged that in spite of the counselling program conducted for pregnant women during their treatment, almost 98 per cent have decided to not take the vaccine due to misconceptions.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commenced the vaccination program for pregnant women back in July 15. Nearly three months into the drive, responses haven’t been that great since nearly 1.6 per cent of pregnant women have taken the jab, of which a mere 869 are fully inoculated.

The report quoted the executive health officer of the BMC, Dr Mangala Gomare who elaborated on how they have been attempting to raise awareness regarding the need for inoculation amongst those pregnant. Adding that they have put up posters in not only maternity and pediatric wards, but also OPD’s. According to her, however, pregnant women continue to remain apprehensive of taking the COVID-19 vaccine.

Additionally, all hospitals run by the civic authority have been asked to undertake counselling programs for pregnant women regarding the advantages of getting vaccinated whilst on their prenatal treatment.
