Mumbai has been named as one of the richest districts in India by GDP per capita, according to the Economic Survey 2024–2025. The district recorded a per capita income of INR 6.57 lakh, placing it at the top of the national list.
As India’s financial hub, Mumbai is home to major industries, Bollywood, and a diverse cultural scene. Landmarks like the Gothic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and the scenic Marine Drive reflect the city’s spirit and pace. The survey also highlighted other top-performing districts across India for their individual contribution to India’s economic growth.
However, Mumbai’s wealth does not reflect in its cleanliness record. The latest Swachh Survekshan 2024–2025 report placed Mumbai 33rd among the dirtiest cities with a population of over one million. This position places the city near the bottom of India’s cleanliness rankings.
Delhi ranked 31st, just above Mumbai, while Srinagar was placed 32nd. In contrast, Ahmedabad in Gujarat was declared the cleanest city in India. It was followed by Bhopal, Lucknow, Raipur, and Jabalpur in the top five.
The Swachh Survekshan rankings were based on several factors, including cleanliness, waste management, sanitation, water management, and the use of machines for desludging. Assessments were carried out in residential and commercial zones, schools, slums, public areas, water bodies, and tourist spots.

Residents of Mumbai have been vocal about the city’s waste and infrastructure problems. Social media posts frequently highlight garbage, potholes, and waterlogging, even in upscale neighbourhoods. Citizens have complained about toilet water spilling onto the streets, causing bad odour and unhygienic conditions.

Furthermore, there have been complaints of potholes and waste management issues. Mumbai thus remains a city of contrasts, leading in economic power but struggling with cleanliness and waste management issues.
