Few days after travelling in a local train to urge the citizens to use face masks in the wake of rising COVID-19 cases in the city, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar has now hit the streets to create awareness.

On Tuesday, February 23, Pednekar visited Dadar vegetable market and distributed masks among those who were roaming without wearing masks and created awareness.

"Mumbai Police has joined hands with us. People are more scared of Police than marshals. Request all to wear masks, sanitize and maintain social distancing," Pednekar said.

Mumbai city has seen a huge spike in new cases after witnessing a slowdown last month.

Earlier, Pednekar had visited the Shivaji Park and reminded those without masks to take all COVID-19 precautions when they step out.

BMC's GN Ward Assistant Commissioner Kiran Dighavkar, Corporator Priti Patankar also accompanied her.

On February 17, the Mayor also went to Santacruz in western suburbs, where she along with a civic team conducted a raid on a hotel where several people who returned from Gulf countries were quarantined as part of the COVID-19 protocols, the official said.

On Monday, February 22, Mumbai reported 760 new coronavirus cases after reporting over 900 cases for two days in a row. According to the data, with 634 more patients recovering from COVID-19, the number of people discharged from hospitals crossed the 3-lakh mark and jumped to 3,00,180. The number of patients under treatment also rose to 7,397.

The civic body has intensified action against people found without masks in public, and will also take action against function halls, gymnasiums, and other establishments that don't follow safety norms. It has also doubled marshals and began sealing buildings with more than five COVID-19 patients.

Moreover, on Saturday night, February 20, three restaurants and clubs were raided in Bandra (West) and the outlets were fined for violations. In the surprise raids on restaurants and bars, BMC officials said they found most of the staff members were not wearing masks.
