On Monday, October 4, 2021, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar will hold a review meeting over the rising complaints about clean-up marshals and harassment by them. The meeting would be held along with the municipal commissioner and other concerned civic officials.

The Birhanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s clean-up marshals have a lot of controversies surrounding them for allegedly harassing the citizens over the implementation of the compulsory face mask rule. Several videos are doing rounds of verbal abuse and physical fights between the citizens and the clean-up marshals.

In Matunga, a fight broke out between the marshal and citizens after an argument over face masks on Tuesday, September 28, 2021. Complaints about bogus clean-up marshals are also increasing. Clean-up marshals are appointed to fine the people who do not comply with the rule of wearing a face mask. They need to show their ID cards and wear the uniform, as per the BMC rule; however, many of the clean-up marshals do not wear uniforms.

Pednekar, while talking to The Indian Express, said that the meeting would discuss these complaints. Criminal complaints against the clean up-marshals and contractors would be filed.

She was asked if the civic body is thinking to discontinue the services of clean-up marshals, she said there is no need to have clean-up marshals if citizens follow COVID-19 guidelines, such as wearing a face mask.

On Friday, October 1, an opposition leader of BMC had caught bogus clean-up marshals in Ghatkopar and lodged a police complaint.
