The decision by the Maharashtra government to relocate the Metro car shed from Aarey Colony to Kanjumarg could mean that the Metro corridor may now be connected to the extended Mumbai Metropolitan Region as well.

In addition, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is also planning a 45-km Metro line from Kanjurmarg to Badlapur, a satellite town in Thane district. Earlier on October 11, the Uddhav Thackeray government had decided to shift the controversial car shed of the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro from Aarey Colony after a public movement broke out last year to save one of the city’s green lungs.

Moreover, this car shed will be used for both Metro-3 and Metro-6. The government has further decided to sanction the land free of cost for the development of the metro car shed. Thackeray had earlier asserted that the money spent on the car shed in Aarey will not be wasted adding that the departments will look at using the construction is a wise manner.

Furthermore, he also announced that the government has decided to protect 800 acres of Aarey land as a reserve forest. After thorough consideration, officials increased the land from 600 acres to nearly 800 acres. The departments are also working towards protecting the rights of the indigenous communities that live there as well. Moreover, this will also mark the first instance in the world where an extensive forest will be blooming in the midst of the city.
