In an attempt to avoid crowding at vegetable markets in Mumbai amid the coronavirus outbreak, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to set up additional centres for selling vegetables across the city. Currently, Municipal Commissioner Praveen Pardeshi has ordered BMC officials to temporarily start these centres in some parts of the city.

On Monday, a video conference was held between BMC Commissioner Pardeshi and top civic officials. During the meeting, Pardeshi asked the responsible officials to take necessary measures to ensure that the additional centres are set up properly. He asked the officials to send ward officers to explain the vendors about the timings for sale of vegetables and fruits and direct them to follow social distancing norms.

Pardeshi also asked the officials to seek co-operation from the senior police inspectors in their respective wards to ensure smooth functioning of the initiative.

As per the directives, a minimum distance of 2 feet must be maintained between two vendors. Alongside, at these vegetable sales centres, the two customers must maintain a minimum distance of 1 metre between themselves while purchasing the groceries.

Asking the officials to ensure that the necessary measures are taken, the BMC Commissioner allowed the sale of vegetables and fruits to ensure the citizens are able to procure the essential item. The vendors have been permitted to sell the groceries at open spaces and on either side of main roads.

In case, the people or the vendor fail to maintain social distancing and flout the regulations, the additional commissioner has been authorised to direct the ward officers to disallow the vendors from selling groceries in the disputed area.

As the lockdown has been extended till May 3, the people might panic-shop and therefore, the move by Pardeshi will ensure that people do not rush to the grocery shops and flout social distancing norms.
