The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had earlier decided that all of its offices will run at 50 per cent attendance, keeping the coronavirus outbreak in mind. However, according to the new circular, BMC offices will now operate at 75 per cent attendance and this decision has been made mandatory by the senior officials.

This circular was issued by the municipality on Friday, May 9, 2020. The decision was revised to ensure that the staff continues to maintain social distancing as the municipal offices observed 100 per cent attendance of staff and officers.

Notices were being sent to those who did not attend work as per the guidelines and this new rule will be applicable until further notice.

Mumbai's BEST and ST buses have been operating regularly and providing essential services as the railways are closed. However, transport staff observed a heavy number of passengers from the municipal offices, indicating a possibility of infection. Hence, the municipality had to make changes and cancel the earlier decisions.

Of the 75 per cent employees, 25 per cent will be assigned work related to coronavirus screening around their homes. Other 25 per cent employees will be in charge of managing the quarantine centres, monitoring the supply of oxygen and beds in the BMC-run hospitals, sanitation, pre-monsoon works and other aspects. Further, employees above the age of 55 are exempted from attending the offices until May 31, 2020.

The corporation has also said that senior officers will be called when needed. Similarly, attendance has not been made compulsory for disabled employees in essential and non-essential services.

Keeping the increasing number of coronavirus cases in mind, the state government, in a decision taken on Thursday, May 8, 2020,  transferred BMC Commissioner Praveen Pardeshi as additional CS in the urban development department. Iqbal Chahal, who serves as the UDD principal secretary becomes the new BMC Commissioner.
