Heavy rains on May 26 caused widespread waterlogging across Mumbai, including areas previously unaffected like Mantralaya and KEM Hospital, according to a report by Maharashtra Times. The city recorded over 250 mm of rainfall in just a few hours, overwhelming the drainage system and disrupting local services.

Waterlogging led to traffic jams on highways and key roads, with severe accumulation reported in Hindmata, Milan Subway, and Gandhi Market. For the first time, areas such as Metro Junction, Worli Naka, J.J. Flyover, and parts of Colaba experienced flooding.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which previously identified 388 low-lying areas, discovered 80 new ones during the May 26 downpour. This prompted the civic body to investigate causes of flooding in newly affected areas.

In response, the BMC has announced plans to install flood gates at 20 locations to prevent seawater intrusion during high tide, according to Additional Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar. A tender will be issued once a survey is complete. These measures are aimed at mitigating flooding during the next monsoon season.

Additionally, the BMC is increasing the number of water pumps deployed across the city. Last year, 474 pumps were in use; this number dropped to 414 earlier this year. Following the recent rains, the number has been increased by 100, based on input from the city's 24 municipal wards.
