The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified 13 locations for setting up kabutarkhanas in the suburbs.

However, the civic body has failed to find suitable sites in the island city. Most of the shortlisted sites are in the eastern suburbs.

Civic officials said the list of proposed sites will be placed before Bombay high court for approval.

The exercise follows Bombay high court orders directing closure of pigeon shelters in residential areas, including the heritage Dadar kabutarkhana, after complaints of health hazards.

Last week, assistant municipal commissioners of 25 wards were directed to suggest possible sites for pigeon-feeding zones. While 13 spots were proposed in suburban wards, the civic officials reported no availability in nine island city wards — A, B, C, D, E, G-South, G-North, F-South, and F-North — along with H-East, P-East, K-East and P-South.

Last week, cabinet minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha had inaugurated a designated kabutarkhana inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

There are 51 pigeon lofts in Mumbai. After discussions in the Legislative Council and as per the court order, some pigeon lofts were closed.

A committee of experts has been appointed to find a solution regarding pigeon lofts and has been asked to prepare a report on this.
