Air pollution in Mumbai is increasing day by day. The Chief Minister has ordered action against gold and silver furnaces in Mumbai to prevent air pollution. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken action to remove four furnaces and furnaces of gold and silversmiths located in C Section, suburban area of Mumbai. This action has been taken due to air pollution.

Under the guidance of the BMC Commissioner and Administrator Iqbal Singh Chahal and Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs) Dr Sudhakar Shinde, the measures are being implemented in all 24 administrative departments of the Municipal Corporation. Along with this, keeping in view the wider health interest, the Municipal Corporation administration has directed to take strict action against other factors causing air pollution as well.

According to these instructions, the Buildings and Factories Department under the C Division office of the Municipal Corporation has started action on gold and silver smelting furnaces (Galai business) in urban areas. On November 6, a total of 4 chimneys of gold and silver smelters i.e. smelters on Dhanji Marg and Miza Marg in C Sector were evicted. Such actions will continue in future also. In the gold and silver smelting business, gold and silver are melted. There is a small scale factory for that. In this, a furnace is used to melt gold and silver. The gas generated from this is released into the air through the chimney/flue.

The gas released without scientific treatment poses a threat to human health. Since this dangerous gas increases pollution, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has taken strict action against street vendors violating air pollution norms.
