In a latest development, Mumbai Traffic Police has decided to run the #NoHonkDay campaign every Wednesday. The initiative is aimed at curbing noise pollution in the city.

Under this initiative, the police will hold a special drive to penalise motorists honking unnecessarily on all prominent roads in the city on Wednesdays.

“Our volunteers will be at junctions with placards to drive home the point,” said officials.

This move comes after the city traffic police had on the weekend organised a special awareness campaign against honking.

Releasing an official statement, the Mumbai police noted that due to increasing number of vehicles in the city of Mumbai, the Mumbai Traffic Police branch has planned who are unnecessarily honking which is create noise pollution.

Explaining the details about the campaign, it stated that the in charge Police Inspectors from all the Traffic Divisions in Mumbai will organise a full day No Honking Day every Wednesday within their Jurisdiction. It will display a No Honking sign/banner to motorists stopped at the signal. At the same time, they will provide guidance and counselling to the drivers on the issue of No Honking.

"In order to take legal action against the drivers violating the traffic rules, challan action will be taken against the maximum number of drivers who violating the No Honking rules. However, if you have any queries regarding #NoHonkDay, you should contact the Help line Number 8454999999 at the Traffic Control Room," the statement further added.

According to the traffic police, during the drive, officials will be posted at more than 100 junctions in the city to penalise motorists caught honking without any reason. The violators will also be sent for counselling.

Reports stated that in the past two months, the traffic police have penalised 12,194 motorists for unnecessary honking and 306 drivers for modification of silencers creating noise pollution.

Checkpoints were set up at major junctions across the city where 1,856 motorists were caught for unnecessary honking and 14,754 challans were issued for other traffic offences. Besides, 213 FIRs were filed for wrong side driving, reports further mentioned.
