Mumbaikars have always been prone to traffic, especially during peak hours. However, the city traffic police has been taking consistent effort in an attempt to find a solution to hours of long queues.

In a major relieving news for motorists, last year, Hemant Nagrale, the Mumbai Commissioner of Police (CP), has issued a circular to the Traffic Department stating that the focus should be traffic monitoring and movement.

With this, the Mumbai traffic police are not anymore permitted to harass someone by stopping them needlessly, nor will they be able to check your vehicle without a reason.

The objective is to avoid unnecessary vehicle stops, as the number of vehicles on the road has increased considerably and it leads to traffic snarls.

Traffic officers will continue to halt cars that violate the laws, and they will be charged under the terms of the Motor Vehicles Act (MVA).

As per the circular, the traffic police will not inspect cars, especially when there is a check point; they will merely monitor traffic and focus on ensuring that traffic goes regularly. They will only halt a car if it is slowing down traffic.

If these instructions are not strictly followed, the senior inspector of the concerned traffic post will be held responsible. However, cops will continue to issue challans against traffic offenses same as before and will only stop the traffic violators.

Earlier, the cops would stop the traffic and start checking the vehicle because of which the traffic would increase and it would cause a jam.

Later, the newly-appointed CP Sanjay Pandey also issued fresh rules since he assumed the office. Meanwhile, this continues to remain in force.
