On Wednesday, May 4, Mumbai Police Commissioner, Sanjay Pandey met with representatives of various religious shrines in the city and asked them to apply for police permission if they look to utilize loudspeakers, reports stated.

According to accounts, nearly 200 representatives of religious shrines attended the meeting wherein Pandey cautioned of action if they were found to be violating noise pollution norms and utilizing loudspeakers without permission.

Based on narratives, the Mumbai Police Commissioner informed them that loudspeakers can only be used by them from 6 am to 10 pm since that is allowed by the Noise Pollution Rules.

He added that the noise levels should be maintained under 55 decibels if the religious places are in a residential area, 65 decibels if they are in a commercial area and 75 decibels if they are in an industrial area.

It has been reported that the police in accordance with civic records remarked that there are nearly 2,400 temples across Mumbai and a mere one per cent which is 24 had legal permission to utilize loudspeakers. Therefore, they should promptly apply to the police and obtain requisite permissions if they are making use of loudspeakers and do not want to face police action.

On the other hand, the police have reportedly begun counting the number of churches and Gurudwaras in Mumbai, as cited reports. Reportedly there are 1,140 mosques in Mumbai of which nearly 930 have been given permission to make use of loudspeakers.
