According to reports, Mumbai Police collected a fine of INR 4 crores in one month from two lakh people in the city, who were found not wearing mask despite the surge in cases of coronavirus.
Moreover, earlier more than 5,000 passengers who did not wear face masks have been caught by the railway authorities since last February. In addition, a fine of INR 8,36,900 was levied on these passengers. While it is mandatory to wear a face mask as a preventative measure while travelling, many ignore it. While commuting, some passengers have a mask in their pocket whereas some have a mask on their chin.
In view of the situation, Mumbai civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appointed marshals at various stations and boundaries to take action against such passengers. In addition, BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal had earlier announced strict measures to curb the spread of the contagious disease adding that a fine of INR 200 will be imposed on people found without masks.
According to sources, strict action was taken against 4,017 passengers in February and 1,243 passengers till March 5. On March 4, more than 300 passengers without masks were arrested.
In the past, the Mumbai Commissioner of Police had informed that the Mumbai Police are now authorized to issue challans to offenders not wearing a face mask in view of the pandemic and the rising number of COVID-19 cases. Earlier on February 20, the civic body fined a total of 16,154 people for not wearing face masks at public places in Mumbai. Moreover, INR 32,30,800 has been collected by the civic body on this single-day drive. Meanwhile, most of the people were fined at places like restaurants, theatres, gyms, and clubs.
